Better Business: Carpet cleaning services -- tips for the holiday season - Memphis Commercial Appeal
Better Business: Carpet cleaning services -- tips for the holiday season - Memphis Commercial Appeal

You may be planning to get your carpets or rugs cleaned for holiday parties and guests. With so many companies to choose from and advertised prices that run the gamut, you want to be sure you get your money's worth and don't run into problems.

One fellow who filed a complaint with us about a carpet cleaner said, "Wrong chemicals were used. I tried numerous times to get them back out. Now the phone number to reach them is disconnected."

Another lady said, "They lost or stole one of my oriental rugs. When I call, they hang up on me."

Another man's experience was equally frustrating. The company did a poor job of restretching his carpets, leaving visible seams; did such a lousy job of cleaning tile and grout that he refused to let them seal it; and knocked an antique clock off his wall, causing $755 in damage. In his response to the complaint, the company owner said the workman who broke the clock was a subcontractor and would have to make his own arrangements to compensate the customer for the damage.

The Better Business Bureau offers these tips for choosing a reputable carpet cleaning company:

Get references from your family, friends and neighbors.

Check out the company's record with the BBB. One of the companies cited above has had an F rating with us for years, yet people continue to use it and encounter problems.

Price does matter, but the lowest price is not always the best price. While no one wants to be overcharged, extremely low prices should set off warning signals. Ask exactly what is included in the price and be sure to get it in writing before the crew begins any work.

Find out what you get for your money. Just as pricing can differ from company to company so can the services included in the price and what the company considers "extras." What type of cleaning agent does the company use and exactly how does it work? Will the cleaning company move furniture and return it to its original location? Is there an extra charge for this service? What about pre-treating spots and heavily soiled areas? Are there extra charges for high traffic areas?

Ask who will actually be coming into your home. Does the company use its own employees or sub-contract the job to someone else? Are they bonded and insured? Who is responsible if the crew damages the carpet or other items in your home?

Find out what care is required after the cleaning. How long will it take to dry? What kind of ventilation is needed?

What if you're not happy with the cleaning? Is your satisfaction guaranteed? Don't rely on oral promises -- get the guarantee in writing.

Pay with a credit card if possible. You might have more recourse if something goes wrong than you would by writing a check or paying cash.

The BBB can provide a roster of accredited carpet cleaning companies.

-- Randy Hutchinson: rhutchinson@bbbmidsouth.org.

Well-maintained carpet can last 10-15 years. Angie's List , the nation's premier provider of consumer reviews, asked highly rated carpet cleaners about the most common cleaning methods.

Steam cleaning (also known as hot water extraction): The most universally used carpet cleaning technique. This process typically involves spraying a solution of warm or hot water and a cleaning agent into the carpet, then extracting it all with a powerful vacuum. This can be a truck-mounted system or a portable unit. The truck mounted system ensures the dirt is removed outside the home. A downside to hot water extraction cleaning is a long dry time, which typically ranges from four to 10 hours, depending on the carpet type and the humidity level in the home.

Bonnet cleaning: A low moisture cleaning method which some prefer because there is less of a chance for mold and mildew. The bonnet method consists of a round cleaning pad that fits like a cap over a rotary brush to help loosen dirt from the carpet. While the top one-third of the carpet is cleaned, soil which has settled to the bottom of the pile remains behind. This cleaning method should be viewed as a temporary measure between more intensive cleanings.

"Dry" carbonating extraction: Uses carbonation to create effervescent bubbles, which lift dirt from the carpet before extracting it with a strong vacuum. Though frequently referred to as a "dry" method, it actually does use water, but requires just a fifth of the water needed for traditional steam cleaning, Some companies may heat the solution up before applying it to give it more reaction to the carpet versus using plain water.

"Always be careful when you hear promotions for carpet cleaning. Never go with an estimate that sounds too good to be true," Hicks said. "Carpet cleaning cost are determined by the square footage of the area being cleaned or the number of stairs. Always insist on an in-home estimate to get the best estimate possible and remember than even a small area may cost around $79 to be cleaned."

Carpet cleaning technician, Jason Hanna, has this advice to keep your carpets looking their best. "Don't eat or drink in the rooms where there is carpet. Vacuum at least a couple times a week and if you take your shoes off your carpet will last almost forever."

Clean regularly: To keep your carpets cleaner longer, vacuum them regularly yourself with a good, household vacuum cleaner and have them professionally cleaned by a qualified and reputable company at least once a year and in accordance with your manufacturer's instructions. Clean more often if you have pets or heavy foot traffic.

Act fast: The longer a stain sits in your carpet, the hard it is to remove it. Some cleaning products can actually make a stain worse if not used properly – so be sure to call a professional.

Is your carpet loose? Consider getting your carpet stretched if it's showing signs of being loose. A loose carpet will wear faster because the fibers overlap and rub together with the dirt buried in them, which acts like sand paper.

Angie's List tips for hiring a professional carpet cleaner:

What's the cost? Professional carpet cleaning costs typically start at around $79 for a small area and go up from there, depending on the size of your home and the type of cleaning you choose. Plus, stairs and hallways are generally not considered part of a room. Most companies will offer a free in-home estimate. Avoid the temptation of offers from companies offering super-cheap cleanings – for example, a $49 whole-house cleaning. Generally speaking, these deals are too good to be true.
Ask about certification: Only use carpet cleaning companies who can show certification from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC), which most manufacturers require, and are insured and bonded.
Obtain a written contract: Before any work is done, obtain a written contract with the total prices and statement of guarantees that the cleaning company offers. Most reputable companies will return if carpet stains show back up after they leave – so ask about any guarantees before you sign a contract.

Copyright 2011 Scripps Media, Inc. Carpet cleaning and tile cleaning. With the carpet cleaning we use steam, a state-of-the-art truck mount machine which really gets deep into the piles and gets rid of dust. You can really see the difference between dry cleaning and steam cleaning. With the tiles the grout comes up as if it's brand new.

How did you make your first dollar? I did a paper run as a child back in England, trudging through the snow.

What sort of clients does your business provide services to? We deal a lot with real estate agents with premises which are rentals that have been vacated. Plus busy people who like to spruce up their homes for Christmas.

How did you get into your current line of work? For 30 years I was in finance and retired just over a year ago and found after six months life was terribly boring. We found that the carpet cleaners that came to Dayboro we were totally dissatisfied with. We found that Dayboro did not have a carpet and tile cleaning service, and we decided to get a professional product up and running.

What is the most unique job your business has done? We did a house recently, which was repossessed by the bank, and ducks and animals had been living in the house. Carpet cleaner takes on castle task - Alton Telegraph
Carpet cleaner takes on castle task - Alton Telegraph

COLLINSVILLE - Family-owned business Clo-Dex Carpet Care took on a royal job for the Stuart Castle in Eureka, Mo., earlier this year.

Troy Turner, owner of Clo-Dex Carpet Care, and his wife, Linda, have been in the carpet business for about a year now. Their company has already had about 100 jobs, but cleaning the Stuart Castle carpet has been their most interesting by far.

"It's quite a place to go through and look at," Turner said. "It was a pretty neat opportunity, not that many people get a crazy opportunity like that."

The Stuart Castle has been around since the 1904 World's Fair. The founder of Brown Shoe Co. built a house on the property that was used for a summer home. Around the 1950s, dermatologist Wallace Stuart bought the house and the surrounding acres from the owner. Wallace wanted to build a castle for his then-wife. After 10 years of construction on the house, she filed for divorce from the doctor.

Now the castle is in foreclosure after another doctor bought it from Wallace.

Mg Property Preservation Inc. in Troy, Ill., now manages the house.

The company contacted Turner's carpet business in April to clean the carpet of the estimated 8,000-square-foot castle.

"I can't imagine trying to heat and cool that place," Turner said. "It's massive, which is kind of why people are turned off by it."

The castle sits on six acres, but when Wallace was the owner it comprised about 122 acres. The hefty $1 million price tag on the property has gone down to about $400,000 as well.

Turner said the castle is far from being haunted, as many people believe, but it does have an unusual background.

"Just the history and story is pretty cool," Turner said. "There are a lot secret passageways. I never could try to find out how to find my way to the garage."

Because of other press publicity at the time about Turner's family-owned business cleaning the castle's carpet, Turner received a phone call from a widow who told him she usually did not let men come into her home. But after she read an article about Clo-Dex and their work at the castle, she trusted Turner and his business.

That was one of the many developments Turner said he was looking for when he first started his business - trust with his customers.

Turner and his wife, along with three boys and two dachshunds, have lived in several houses over the years. Before the business, he would often call upon the big chain carpet companies to get the carpet cleaned, but he was never fully satisfied. He said that they would never actually get it clean enough, still leaving the carpet wet afterward.

Turner told his wife, "One of these days I'm going to buy a carpet cleaner and we'll take the time to do it right."

The family did just that. The two dogs, Chloe and Dexter, were the inspiration for the company's name and the three boys help out with anything they can.

"We pay attention to detail beyond what a chain store would do," Turner said. "We just feel good about what we're doing."

For more information, call Turner at (618) 409-5833 or visit the company's website at www.clo-dexcarpetcare.com.

Carpet cleaning - how's a consumer to know whether hot water extraction, bonnet, or "dry" carbonation techniques are best? Angie's List, the nation's premier provider of consumer reviews, asked highly rated carpet cleaners about the most common cleaning methods.Common carpet cleaning methods:Steam cleaning (also known as hot water extraction): The most universally used carpet cleaning technique. This process typically involves spraying a solution of warm or hot water and a cleaning agent into the carpet, then extracting it all with a powerful vacuum. This can be a truck-mounted system or a portable unit. The truck mounted system ensures the dirt is removed outside the home. A downside to hot water extraction cleaning is a long dry time, which typically ranges from four to 10 hours, depending on the carpet type and the humidity level in the home.Bonnet cleaning: A low moisture cleaning method which some prefer because there is less of a chance for mold and mildew. The bonnet method consists of a round cleaning pad that fits like a cap over a rotary brush to help loosen dirt from the carpet. While the top one-third of the carpet is cleaned, soil which has settled to the bottom of the pile remains behind. This cleaning method should be viewed as a temporary measure between more intensive cleanings."Dry" carbonating extraction: Uses carbonation to create effervescent bubbles, which lift dirt from the carpet before extracting it with a strong vacuum. Though frequently referred to as a "dry" method, it actually does use water, but requires just a fifth of the water needed for traditional steam cleaning, Some companies may heat the solution up before applying it to give it more reaction to the carpet versus using plain water. Angie's List carpet cleaning advice: Taking care of your carpet will help extend its life. Well-maintained carpet can last 10-15 years. What does the manufacturer recommend? While most carpet types can withstand any of these cleaning methods, it's important to follow your carpet manufacturer's recommended method. Some manufacturers will not honor the carpet's warranty to cover damage if their specified method is not followed.Act fast: The longer a stain sits in your carpet, the hard it is to remove it. Some cleaning products can actually make a stain worse if not used properly - so be sure to call a professional.Clean regularly: To keep your carpets cleaner longer, vacuum them regularly yourself with a good, household vacuum cleaner and have them professionally cleaned by a qualified and reputable company at least once a year and in accordance with your manufacturer's instructions. Clean more often if you have pets or heavy foot traffic. Is your carpet loose? Consider getting your carpet stretched if it's showing signs of being loose. A loose carpet will wear faster because the fibers overlap and rub together with the dirt buried in them, which acts like sand paper.Homeowners can rent or buy carpet cleaning equipment, but these machines usually aren't as effective as professional cleaners. Professional carpet cleaners have access to commercially available equipment and cleaning supplies. Angie's List tips for hiring a professional carpet cleaner:What's the cost? Professional carpet cleaning costs typically start at around $79 for a small area and go up from there, depending on the size of your home and the type of cleaning you choose. Plus, stairs and hallways are generally not considered part of a room. Most companies will offer a free in-home estimate. Avoid the temptation of offers from companies offering super-cheap cleanings - for example, a $49 whole-house cleaning. Generally speaking, these deals are too good to be true.Ask about certification: Only use carpet cleaning companies who can show certification from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC), which most manufacturers require, and are insured and bonded.Obtain a written contract: Before any work is done, obtain a written contract with the total prices and statement of guarantees that the cleaning company offers. Most reputable companies will return if carpet stains show back up after they leave - so ask about any guarantees before you sign a contract.
Copyright 2011 by Angie's List.
